“In the front yard of a house in Alabama, a wooden chair stands as a silent monument to a life cut short. It was hand-carved by 18-year-old Elder Marín Chávez Carranza in the woodworking shop at Asbury High School. Two months after shaping that wood, the young man who dreamed of becoming a welder traded his school uniform for the jumpsuit of the detention center.“
